In this article we are going to look at 6 significant phrases and words that you can use to improve your manuscript.

1. Found to be

The results were (found to be)significant.

2.Compared with. vs Compared to.

Compared with is used when showing a difference between two things. Whilst Compared to is used when showing a similarity between two things.

Our study shows a similar pattern ofresults compared to previous studies. Vs Our study revealed discrepancies in findings compared with previous studies.

3.Provided and Providing

We use these words to show that ourstatement depends on something.

Provided and providing are normally followed by “that”

Provided that future research is carried out, we expect to find a cure for this condition within the next 10 years.

4. Principle vs Principal

A principle is aproposition or value that is a guide for behaviour

A principal is the chief executive of a university or college

5. NOT similar as! (Similar to)

If 2 things are similar youshould say, “similar to”

6. NOT Besides, say “Besides that”.

Many Chinese authors say “Besides…” when they mean “Furthermore…” or “In addition”. If you want to use the word“besides” you should say “besides that”.
